Another Indigenous Leader Killed in Misamis Oriental

Jose Paborada, a member of the same community as Gilbert Paborada, was shot on his left lower limb when security guards and elements of the National Bureau of Investigation fired their guns at them on March 10, 2011. It is believed that either security forces or a local militia affiliated with A. Brown, a palm oil company, are responsible for the death of Gilbert (Photo by Ronalyn V. Olea /Bulatlat)

In a press release on October 3rd Karapatan stated:

Gilbert Paborada, Chairperson of PANGALASAG was shot dead just this afternoon. PANGALASAG is an [Indigenous Peoples] IP organization resisting the oil palm expansion of A. Brown in Opol, Misamis Oriental; and a member of KALUMBAY, a sub-regional IPs Alliance in Northern Mindanao.

He was shot dead 2pm this afternoon inside a house that has become his sanctuary for months now. He is a human rights defender at-risk. Initial report by Jonah Cossma Jumagbas, Alternate Coordinator of RMP-NMR, who is in the site now with the quick reaction team composed of human rights organizations revealed that 8 bullets peppered Paborada’s body.

Details to follow.
